Hawaii in Shoulder Season: Best Months for Families to Visit
April, May, September, and October are Hawaii's secret family seasons. A Hawaii mom's honest case for skipping the crowds and saving 30 percent.

If you have ever priced a family trip to Hawaii during Christmas break or spring break and felt your eye twitch, this post is for you. Hawaii's shoulder seasons - the windows between the peak holiday rushes - are the smartest time to bring your family to the islands. Lower prices, smaller crowds, the same warm ocean, and most of the same activities. The catch is knowing exactly which weeks to target and which ones look like shoulder season but are actually traps.
I have lived in Hawaii and traveled here from the mainland with my own kids in nearly every month of the calendar. Here is the honest mom-to-mom take on when to come and when to wait.
What Counts as Hawaii Shoulder Season
Hawaii has two shoulder seasons:
- Spring: Mid-April (after Easter) through early June (before school break starts on the mainland)
- Fall: Late August (after most school terms have started) through mid-December (before Christmas crowds arrive)
Within those windows, the absolute sweetest spots for families are late April to early May and late September to mid-October. That is where you find the magic combination: warm ocean, flights at half their winter rate, hotels with availability, no waitlist for snorkel charters, and beaches where you can actually find shade.
Why Shoulder Season Is Better with Kids
1. Smaller Crowds at Every Activity
The Pearl Harbor 56-day ticket window opens with availability. The Old Lahaina Luau still has tables. The manta night snorkel boats have last-minute spots. Hanauma Bay does not require a sunrise wakeup to score a reservation. With kids, the difference between a 30-minute wait and a 5-minute wait is the difference between a great memory and a meltdown.
2. 30 to 40 Percent Off Hotels and Flights
The mainland-to-Hawaii airfare graph has a literal valley in late April through May and again in September through early November. Same flight that runs $750 round-trip in December costs $400 in May. Family of four = $1,400 saved on flights alone.
Hotels follow the same pattern. The Grand Wailea, the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Aulani - all post their lowest rates of the year in this window. Shoulder season is also when many resorts run kids-stay-free promotions, kids-eat-free promotions, or 'fourth night free' bookings.
3. Same Beach Weather
Here is what most mainland parents do not realize: Hawaii's weather is remarkably consistent year-round. Daytime temperatures range 78 to 88 in summer and 75 to 82 in winter. Ocean temperatures stay between 75 and 80 all year. The only meaningful difference is rainfall (December through March is wetter, especially on the windward sides of each island) and surf size (winter brings huge North Shore swells, summer brings them to the South Shore).
Shoulder season generally has the best weather of the entire year - dry, sunny, low surf, perfect snorkeling.
4. Whales (Sometimes)
Late April still gets you the tail end of humpback whale season. Whale watching in late April is excellent and you avoid the peak whale crowds of February and March.
The Specific Best Weeks for Families
Late April (after Easter)
The single best family Hawaii week of the year. Spring break crowds have left. The summer rush has not started. Whales are still around. Mango season is just beginning on the Hilo side. Mother's Day is the only premium weekend. Otherwise, prices are low and beaches are quiet.
Watch out for: Easter week itself (very crowded). Wait until the weekend after Easter to fly in.
First Half of May
Continued sweet spot. School-aged kids miss a few days of class but the savings cover it. Lei Day (May 1) is a beautiful cultural day to be in Hawaii.
Watch out for: Memorial Day weekend at the end of May - hotel rates jump.
Late September to Mid-October
The fall counterpart to late April. School-age families avoid this window because of school, which means it is wonderfully quiet. The water is at its warmest of the year (79 to 81 degrees in October). Surf is low. Volcano viewing on the Big Island is dependable. The only meaningful tradeoff is hurricane season technically running through November - though direct hits are extremely rare and forecasting is reliable.Watch out for: Aloha Festivals run mid-September on Oahu and bring local crowds (in a fun way).
Early November
The last good week before Thanksgiving rates kick in. November 1-15 is a hidden gem for families with younger kids who are not yet in K-12. Trade winds are reliable, hotel rates are still low.
Watch out for: Thanksgiving week is one of the most expensive weeks of the year, do not get tricked.
The 'Looks Like Shoulder Season But Is Not' Trap Weeks
- Easter Week: Hotel rates spike. Spring breakers from many universities. Skip.
- Memorial Day Weekend: Long-weekend rush. Skip.
- Late June through August: Summer family travel peak. Hotel rates climb 50 percent.
- Thanksgiving Week: Massively crowded and overpriced.
- Late December through January 2: Highest rates of the year by a mile.
- Mid-January through Mid-February: Winter snowbird and whale-watcher peak. Pricier.
- Spring Break (varies by district, generally late March to early April): Spring breakers and family travelers overlap. Avoid the second-to-last week of March in particular.
Island-Specific Notes
Oahu in Shoulder Season
Oahu is the island least affected by seasonality - it is busy year-round because of conventions and military traffic. But shoulder season still saves you 25 percent on Waikiki hotels and roughly 35 percent on Aulani.
Maui in Shoulder Season
The most dramatic savings are on Maui. Kaanapali and Wailea resort rates can drop 40 percent in May and October. The Road to Hana is dramatically less crowded.
Big Island in Shoulder Season
The Big Island is generally the cheapest island year-round, and shoulder season makes it nearly affordable on a normal family budget. October is the single best month for the Big Island - dependable weather, great visibility for stargazing on Mauna Kea, and small crowds at the volcano.
Kauai in Shoulder Season
April and May on Kauai are exceptional. Less rain than the December peak, the Napali Coast catamarans run consistently, and Hanalei Bay is calm enough for kids to swim. October is also great but expect more variable weather; pack a dry bag and an extra towel.
Hurricane and Weather Risk
Hawaii's official hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Direct hurricane hits on Hawaii are exceedingly rare (the last major one to make landfall was Hurricane Iniki in 1992). However, tropical storms can disrupt travel, and shoulder-season visitors should:
- Buy travel insurance - especially for late September and October trips. A few hundred dollars covers up to 50 percent of pre-paid bookings.
- Build a flex day into the itinerary. If a tropical depression rolls through, you may lose one beach day.
- Stay updated on the National Hurricane Center website during your trip.
What to Pack for Shoulder Season Hawaii
Same packing list as any Hawaii trip with kids, plus a few additions:
- A light rain jacket per kid for occasional shoulder-season showers (especially in October)
- A long-sleeve shirt for cooler evenings (Hawaii in October at sunset can be 70 degrees and breezy)
- Reef-safe mineral sunscreen - the sun is still strong
- UPF rash guards for kids - the water is warm enough for long swim sessions
- A kids' snorkel set - shoulder season is the best snorkel visibility of the year
- Water shoes
- Picaridin bug spray - mosquitoes are quieter in fall but still present
- A pop-up beach tent for napping kids
- Packing cubes for managing kids' clothes for varied conditions
How Far in Advance to Book
- Flights: 90 to 120 days ahead for shoulder season is the sweet spot. Set Google Flights alerts and pull the trigger when prices drop.
- Hotels: 60 to 90 days. Some shoulder-season rates do not even publish until that close in.
- Activities (luau, snorkel charters, manta tours): 4 to 6 weeks for shoulder season. Compare to 12+ weeks for peak.
The Mom Truth
If you have any flexibility on when you can travel - if your kid's school is forgiving about a 5-day absence, if you are on a homeschool schedule, if your family has a younger kid not yet in school - shoulder season Hawaii is one of the best travel deals in the world. Same warm ocean, same beautiful islands, half the people, two-thirds the price. We have done both peak and shoulder, and we will not go back to peak unless we absolutely have to.
