Best Food Trucks in Hawaii That Teenagers Will Actually Love

The food trucks across all four islands that even the pickiest teenager will demolish, from garlic shrimp to acai bowls and everything in between.

Best Food Trucks in Hawaii That Teenagers Will Actually Love

If you want to see a teenager voluntarily put their phone down, take them to a Hawaii food truck. I am not exaggerating. The combination of incredible food, beachy vibes, and the novelty of eating something amazing out of a converted van will make even the most phone-obsessed teen look up and pay attention. Here are the food trucks across all four main islands that my teenagers have demolished and demanded we return to.

Oahu Food Trucks

Giovanni's Shrimp Truck - Kahuku

Giovanni's is the food truck that started it all on Oahu's North Shore, and it is still one of the best. Parked in Kahuku, this graffiti-covered white truck has been serving garlic shrimp since 1993. The scampi is drowning in butter and garlic, and it comes with two scoops of rice and a slice of lemon. My son, who claims he "does not like seafood," ate his entire plate and then finished his sister's. That is the power of Giovanni's.

Get the scampi (garlic butter) - it is the original and it is the best. The hot and spicy version is legitimately spicy, so know your teen's heat tolerance. There is usually a line, especially on weekends, so grab a packable beach chair and settle in. The wait is worth it.

Kahuku Farms - Kahuku

Just down the road from Giovanni's, Kahuku Farms is a working farm with a small cafe window that serves incredible smoothies, acai bowls, grilled banana bread, and fresh fruit. Teens love the acai bowls - piled high with granola, fresh fruit, and honey. The grilled banana bread with ice cream is basically dessert for lunch and nobody is going to judge you for it.

Take the farm tour if your teens are willing - it is actually interesting and they give you samples of everything they grow. It is one of those "educational" things that does not feel educational because you are eating the whole time.

Rainbow Drive-In - Kapahulu

Rainbow Drive-In near Waikiki has been an Oahu institution since 1961. It is technically a walk-up counter, not a truck, but the vibe is pure food truck energy. The mixed plate with two scoops of rice and mac salad is the quintessential Hawaii plate lunch. Teens love the loco moco - a hamburger patty on rice topped with a fried egg and brown gravy. It sounds weird if you have never had it. It is incredible.

Bring a sand-free beach blanket and eat in nearby Kapiolani Park with a view of Diamond Head. That is a lunch memory right there.

Maui Food Trucks

South Maui Fish Company - Kihei

South Maui Fish Company operates out of a truck in Kihei and serves some of the freshest fish tacos on the island. The mahi-mahi tacos with mango salsa are unreal, and the poke nachos are basically a work of art. My daughter, who is 16 and very particular about what she eats, said these were "the best tacos of my life." High praise from someone who grew up in Southern California.

They also have excellent fish and chips if your teen is not adventurous with tacos. Everything is made to order, so bring patience and a water bottle because it can get hot waiting in the Kihei sun.

Coconut Glen's - Road to Hana

Coconut Glen's is a roadside stand on the Road to Hana that serves organic coconut ice cream in a coconut shell. It is vegan, it is delicious, and it is the perfect stop when everyone in the car needs a break and a treat. Flavors rotate but the chocolate chili and lilikoi (passion fruit) are consistently amazing.

This is a cash-only situation, so make sure you have bills on you. The stand is at mile marker 27.5, and there is a small pull-off area for parking. It is a must-stop on the Hana drive.

Jaw's Tacos - Haiku

Jaw's Tacos in Haiku is hidden down a little road in the jungle, and finding it feels like a treasure hunt. The fish tacos are legendary, the portions are huge, and you eat at picnic tables surrounded by tropical plants. Teens love the vibe - it feels like a secret spot that only locals know about (even though it is well-known at this point). The special sauce is addictive.

Big Island Food Trucks

Broke da Mouth Grindz - Waimea

Broke da Mouth Grindz in Waimea serves Hawaiian comfort food that will make your teenager very, very happy. The kalua pork plate is fall-apart tender, the chicken katsu is perfectly crispy, and everything comes with the mandatory two scoops of rice and mac salad. The portions are enormous - my 15-year-old son, who eats constantly, could not finish his plate.

Umeke's Fish Market - Kailua-Kona

Umeke's in Kailua-Kona is where you go for poke. Fresh, beautiful, perfectly seasoned poke in a dozen varieties. Build your own poke bowl with rice, salad greens, or both. Teens who are into healthy eating will love this, and teens who just like good food will love it too. The spicy ahi and the shoyu poke are both incredible.

Pro tip: get there before noon. The popular varieties sell out, and the line gets long in the afternoon. Keep your food in a cooler backpack if you are heading to the beach after.

Tex Drive-In - Honokaa

Tex Drive-In in the small town of Honokaa is famous for one thing: malasadas. These Portuguese donuts are fried to order and filled with custard, haupia (coconut), guava, or bavarian cream. They are hot, pillowy, sugary, and absolutely addictive. I have watched a teenager eat four of them in a row without taking a breath. Buy a dozen and keep them in the car for the drive. You will not regret it.

Kauai Food Trucks

Hanalei Bread Company - Hanalei

The Hanalei Bread Company food truck in Hanalei serves incredible breakfast and lunch items, but the star is the banana bread. Warm, moist, and studded with macadamia nuts, it is the best banana bread on Kauai and possibly in all of Hawaii. They also make excellent breakfast burritos and acai bowls that will fuel your teen for a morning of surfing or paddleboarding.

The Fresh Shave - Koloa

The Fresh Shave in Koloa serves shave ice made with real fruit syrups - not the artificial neon stuff you find at most stands. Flavors like lilikoi, guava, and coconut taste like actual fruit because they are made from actual fruit. Add a scoop of haupia ice cream on the bottom and you have the perfect post-beach treat. My kids ranked this as the best shave ice in Hawaii, beating out Matsumoto's on Oahu (controversial opinion, I know).

Kauai Juice Co. - Kapaa

Kauai Juice Co. in Kapaa is a juice bar and smoothie truck that serves cold-pressed juices, smoothie bowls, and wellness shots. Teens who are into fitness, healthy eating, or just want something refreshing will love this place. The superfood smoothie bowls are massive, beautiful, and taste amazing. Even my kid who thinks vegetables are a conspiracy will drink their smoothies.

Food Truck Tips for Families

  • Bring cash - many trucks are cash-only or have minimum card amounts
  • Go at off-peak hours (before 11:30 AM or after 1:30 PM) to avoid the worst lines
  • Sunscreen while you wait - there is rarely shade in food truck lines
  • Share plates - portions are usually huge and it lets everyone try more things
  • Ask the truck operator what they recommend - they are almost always happy to help and proud of their food
  • Bring a microfiber towel to wipe sticky hands and garlic butter off teen faces
  • Check hours before you go - food trucks keep unpredictable schedules and many are closed on certain days

Why Food Trucks Work for Teens

There is something about a food truck that appeals to teenagers on a fundamental level. It is casual - no dress code, no waiting for a server, no expectations about using the right fork. It is affordable - most plates are $10-15, which means your teen's daily budget can cover it. And it is delicious - the food truck scene in Hawaii is genuinely world-class because the ingredients are so fresh and the competition between trucks keeps everyone at the top of their game.

Build food truck stops into your itinerary the way you would build in snorkeling or hiking. It is not just a meal - it is an experience. And unlike the zip line, you do not need a waiver or a minimum weight requirement. Just an appetite and a willingness to get garlic butter on your shirt.
